Tomeo: A Revolution in Outdoor Furniture Design

Hugo Charlet Berguerand's Award-Winning Metallic Chair Redefines Contemporary Aesthetics

Unveiling Tomeo, an innovative outdoor chair designed by Hugo Charlet Berguerand. This unique piece, awarded Silver in A' Furniture Design Award in 2020, challenges traditional chair structures while meeting essential consumer needs.

Derived from meticulous observation of contemporary furniture trends and aesthetic evolution, Tomeo stands out in its category. Its design inspiration wasn't solely to achieve an appealing appearance, but to propose a unique geometry that distinguishes it from other chairs. The design process relied heavily on intuition, coupled with a profound understanding of the history of furniture design. Elements from everyday life, society, imagination, history, and dreams all contributed to this unique creation.

Tomeo's structure presents a surprising and innovative geometry, differentiating it from other products on the market. The chair appears as if the skeleton has come out of its body, with the seat narrower than the backrest at the rear and the chair legs jutting out towards the sides. The armrests protrude from the backrest at a forty-five-degree angle to meet the front chair legs, giving the impression that the seat and the backrest are suspended inside the structure.

The chair's realization technology involves prototypes made from plastic tubes and 3D printed pieces assembled together. The seat is made from rubber and plastic rods for the second version. The actual chair will be made from bent steel pipes welded together, and the seat will be made from metallic rods or plastic rubber. This innovative structure is as robust as that of traditional chairs, and the design is light and stackable, meeting essential consumer needs.

The project started in 2019 and was completed in 2020 in Milan. The challenge was to give Tomeo a shape that would clearly differentiate it from existing products but that would still be acceptable to consumers in terms of innovation. The result is a modern, light, and stackable steel chair that offers an alternative to the plastic chairs that dominate restaurant terraces.

With Tomeo, Hugo Charlet Berguerand has created a design that not only reflects his personal style but also mirrors the world we live in. The chair's unique structure and contemporary look are a testament to the designer's talent and the versatility of steel as a material. This design is a clear indication of the future of outdoor furniture, where innovation and aesthetics meet functionality and sustainability.
